I think it would be amazing if you could combine wood and excess gold/valuable items to gild items, maybe with an option of a solid covering for a much higher cost and adding accents like vines and leaves for a lesser cost. To walk though a gilded front gate into a gilded viking hall with a gold throne or to have gilded dragon heads on the ends of a mead hall would look pretty cool.
