I think that one of the biggest drawbacks to this game is the lack of land transportation. A good option may be horses, boats to carry said horses, and perhaps even horse-drawn carriages to hold items along with providing a much-needed break from running. Adding a taming system may be a good way to make things a little more challenging for players.

Vikings didn't use horse-drawn carriages and rarely horses at that. They were inefficient for overseas conquest and Vikings preferred to attack away from their village to ensure they wouldn't be followed and counter attacked. I don't know what kind of taming system, outside the one we already have, you want, but you can ride Lox if running or taking portals are too inefficient for you.
