There is an idea to make a whetstone a consumable resource, the rack is made of wood with a hammer, and the circle itself is as usual, but it is placed on this rack, like resin on torches, and sharpening the weapon will wear out this stone on the rack. This will make it necessary to update it periodically. And the weapon itself will not break as it is now, but dull, and a blunt weapon will need to be sharpened on a grindstone, like repairing armor on a workbench. I think this is more logical and realistic. The very same mechanism for working with a grindstone can be done according to the following scheme: put the stand with a hammer, if there is a grindstone in the inventory with the E button, put it on the stand, when the grindstone is installed with the E button, we go to the menu as on a workbench, and there we repair the weapon and sharpen it. When sharpening a weapon, its damage increases, but its durability decreases.

Mod already existing, still a good idea to implement it to the Game. Also i would look in Nexusforums for the most downloaded and used Mods and integrate it to the Game. Most Modder would be fine with that if you ask them to use their code or just rewrite it on your own.
